Rand Paul Staffer Stabbed, Left For Dead in Broad Daylight

A Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) staffer is fighting for their life after sustaining severe injuries in a crazed knife attack on Saturday. Staffer Phil Todd Is reportedly receiving treatment for a potential brain bleed and a punctured lung after being stabbed repeatedly in broad daylight on a Washington, D.C., street. Federal records showed that the suspect, Glynn Neal, had been released from prison just one day prior.

“This past weekend a member of my staff was brutally attacked in broad daylight in Washington, D.C.,” Senator Paul said in a statement.

“I ask you to join Kelley and me in praying for a speedy and complete recovery, and thanking the first responders, hospital staff, and police for their diligent actions. We are relieved to hear the suspect has been arrested. At this time we would ask for privacy so everyone can focus on healing and recovery.”

Todd was exiting a restaurant with a friend when Neal pounced, according to a CBS News report on the police affidavit. The Republican staffer received several stab wounds, receiving injuries to his upper body and the left side of his head. According to the report, the knife “penetrated [Todd’s] skull and likely caused an internal brain bleed.” The staffer also suffered a punctured lung, another “minor” puncture wound to his chest, and injuries to his left ear, possibly requiring reconstruction.

After Todd’s friend helped pull Neal off of him, the two then reportedly ran away. Police discovered a bloody knife near the crime scene. The staffer was taken to the hospital with “life-threatening injuries.”

CBS also reported that Todd and Neal did not know one another before the attack and that the assailant did not ask for or demand anything before the assault. Police described the scene as a “random, violent attack.”

FOX 5 News report revealed that Neal had only been out of prison for one day before the vicious knife attack. The 42-year-old had previously served a twelve-year sentence for forcing two North Carolina women into prostitution under threat of violence. He is charged with assault with intent to kill for the attempt on Todd’s life.

Senator Rand Paul himself was a victim of a similar violent assault in 2017 by his neighbor, which resulted in six broken ribs and a lengthy hospital stay. Paul’s neighbor claimed to have been outraged that the senator left tree debris near his property line. Two years later, the senator had part of his lung removed due to complications from his injuries.

One month earlier, Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was assaulted in a Washington, D.C., elevator under similar circumstances. Her attacker also had a lengthy prior rap sheet.

“The violence in Washington DC is absolutely out of control,” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) said Tuesday morning.

“A staffer for [Rand Paul] was stabbed multiple times in broad daylight. This isn’t unique to Washington, but just about every single blue city in this nation. It’s time to get our inner cities and downtowns under control!”
