‘Publicity Stunt’-Black Florida Business Owner Slams NAACP for Travel Advisory
On Friday, Black Florida business owner Mike Hill pushed back against the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for issuing a travel warning to Black Americans who would consider vacationing in Florida.
“I would tell Black people who have seen this advisory to not come to Florida to simply ignore it,” Mike Hill, who owns an independent insurance and financial services agency in Pensacola, told Fox News.
The NAACP issued a travel advisory earlier this week decrying recent measures taken in Florida to clamp down on Critical Race Theory (CRT) being taught in public schools.
They said the state has become “hostile toward African Americans, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals.” The organization said in a press release that the action was “in direct response to Governor Ron DeSantis’ aggressive attempts to erase Black history and to restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in Florida schools.”

“Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color,” the statement read.

The Florida Republican Party and other Republicans in the state have pushed back against the statement. The Florida GOP touted Florida’s low unemployment rate for African-Americans compared to other states.

Hill believes the statement was a political stunt to help the NAACP fundraise.
“I believe that they see the amount of tens of millions of dollars that Black Lives Matter has been able to raise from the leftist agenda, and so they want a part of that gravy train,” he said. “I believe it was more a publicity stunt. It was an attempt to fundraise more than anything else.”
In a show of blatant hypocrisy, Hill observed that the NAACP’s Board of Directors, Leon Russel, lives in Tampa, Florida.
“The irony that he has lived here most of his adult life, has witnessed the fact that a thousand people a day move to Florida for the opportunity that’s here and that he would still issue out a statement saying don’t come here because of the racist attitudes that exist in Florida,” He said.
But will @NAACP tell DIRECTOR Leon W. Russell to leave Florida? He lives in Tampa @ChairmanNAACP -These people are absolute hypocrites AND liars. https://t.co/8OgbvsKIE0 pic.twitter.com/E3GjrLrZ7s

DeSantis responded to the NAACP’s travel advisory, calling it a “political stunt” during his announcement on Wednesday with Elon Musk and David Sacks, where he declared his candidacy for President for the 2024 election.
“Claiming that Florida is unsafe is a total farce,” he further said.

He concluded that the NAACP’s travel advisory only would serve to prove that they have become an ‘irrelevant’ organization.
“I don’t think it is going to deter anyone from coming to Florida,” he said. “If anything, I think this is going to backfire on the NAACP and show just how irrelevant they’ve become as an organization.”
