The Police report stated that the victim was found with “approximately 38 stab wounds” to the head, torso, and groin. Police said the victim also had tape over her mouth, and her hands were bound behind her body.

Early in the investigation, it was learned the victim had been dating Michael Douglas, 53, of Port Charlotte, prior to her death. Since a majority of murders are perpetrated by a spouse or loved one, detectives started a line of inquiry on Douglas.

According to the arrest affidavit, the victim’s daughter told police that Douglas pursued the victim while she was already in a relationship and was telling her to end it.

Northport Police said other documents showed that Douglas was in the process of purchasing a home together with the victim.

Investigators said DNA evidence gathered from the victim’s body showed DNA on the victim’s body that matched Douglas’ DNA profile, and a partial DNA match was also found from the victim’s fingernail clippings.

Police also had video obtained from an off-duty North Port police officer which showed a Jeep Grand Cherokee belonging to Douglas parked down the street from the victim’s house at around 7:28 p.m. on Sept. 26 which is about an hour before officers arrived at the scene.

“It is due to hard work and dedication from our agency, which will help our victim’s family find some sort of justice for this senseless and heinous crime,” North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison.

Douglas was arrested on a charge of first-degree premeditated murder and transported to the Sarasota County Jail where he is being held without bond.
