Police Arrest DeKalb Man Who Robbed ATM by Exploding a Pipe Bomb Underneath

An as-yet unidentified man from DeKalb County, Georgia, suspected of robbing an ATM by using a Pipe Bomb, was arrested on Saturday morning by the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), and DeKalb County police after a month-long investigation.

According to the DeKalb County Police Department, on March 29, 2023, the suspect chose a Bank of America ATM in the 2000 block of Lawrenceville Highway near North Dekalb Mall in DeKalb County. After detonating one of his Homemade Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) under the ATM, the suspect got away with a significant amount of money.

During the investigation, He was tracked to a location in the 700 block of Scott Boulevard where “FBI agents were out conducting court-authorized activity in that area,” and a SWAT team responded. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

A search warrant executed at the suspect’s residence resulted in several other pipe bombs and components being recovered.

Law enforcement has remained secretive about the case and has not identified the suspect or given any information on how they tracked him down.

“Thanks to our bomb unit, we are able to keep these off the streets and keep DeKalb County safe,” a representative from the police department said, giving credit to their Homeland Security Unit for their hard work in solving the case.

The case is still under investigation; further details will be provided as they become available.
