Pensacola Man Abuses and Tries to Suffocate His Mother With Dementia

Pensacola Man Christopher Jerome Asmar, 54, of Pensacola is in the Escambia County Jail charged with beating his 86-year-old mother who suffers from dementia and trying to suffocate her.

Pensacola Police were called to the home Wednesday evening around 8:30 p.m. by a caregiver who works there, and she told police that she noticed “unexplained bruising” on the woman which always discovered in the morning after the caregivers leave the house.

The caregiver thought something suspicious was going on, so that evening the caregiver left the residence and parked far enough away from the home where her car could not be seen. She walked back to the house and into the backyard where she heard the victims son Asmar screaming obscenities at her. The caregiver then looked in the window and witnessed Asmar strike his mother with a pillow while she was laying in the couch. The caregiver then witnessed Asmar put the pillow over his mom’s face and held her down appearing to be suffocating the victim, so she immediately called police.

When officers arrived, they could hear Asmar talking loudly, but when they knocked on the door, the house went quiet, and nobody came to the door. Due to exigent circumstances, police entered the home and found the victim laying on the couch and Asmar in his bed. According to the police report, the victim was “visibly overwhelmed and disoriented,” and “extremely dazed and confused.”

Not only did the caregiver witness the abuse herself, but she also caught Asmar red handed by setting up a video camera in the living room to see what was causing the victim’s injuries.

Police reviewed the video footage which showed approximately 30 minutes of Asmar continually verbally and physically abusing his mother — including hitting her several times with a pillow and blanket and placing a pillow over her face. His mother could be seen in the video kicking at Asmar in self-defense and placing her hands over her head.

Asmar is being held in the Escambia County Jail without bond, charged with 2 counts of attempted homicide Attempted Homicide & 2 counts of Aggravated Battery on Person 65 Years of Age or Older.

Asmar is set to appear in court on November 4th for his first appearance.
