Pantone Color of the Year Viva Magenta Has Given Tracy Caruso a New Attitude
Each year, Pantone comes out with a color of the year, and whether you pay attention to it or not, it becomes part of your psyche. Everything from wall paint to clothing to blenders will be sold in that color. I like color and fashion trends but gravitate to my comfort zone of black clothing. Yet something in me changed this year with the 2023 Pantone color of the year, Viva Magenta. It has changed my fashion look and attitude.

The first Pantone Color of the Year was Cerulean Blue in 2000, chosen for its calming and serene qualities during uncertainty and change. Since then, Pantone has announced a new Color of the Year every year, often reflecting the time’s social, cultural, and political climate. Some notable Pantone Colors of the Year include:
- Radiant Orchid (2014): a vibrant and expressive purple symbolizing creativity and innovation.
- Greenery (2017): a fresh, zesty yellow-green representing revitalization and renewal.
- Classic Blue (2020): a timeless and dependable blue that offered a sense of stability and reassurance during a tumultuous year.
- Illuminating and Ultimate Gray (2021): a bright yellow and a neutral gray representing hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
- Very Peri (2022): encompasses the qualities of blues and violet. It symbolized transformation and transition in changing times.
I love all shades of pink and red, and as cooky as this sounds, color can change your mood and outlook on life. As soon as I read the year’s new color description, I knew I wanted to embrace those qualities. Â
Viva Magenta is described on the Pantone website as;
Bold, brave, and fearless. It promotes joy and optimism. It’s about writing a new narrative. This year’s Color of The Year is powerful and empowering. It encourages self-expression without restraint, an electrifying and boundless shade manifesting as a stand-out statement. It welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and a rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious and full of wit.

Viva magenta is a bright but dark pink color that appears to be part fuchsia, red, and purple. Any former punk rocker can tell you that pink is badass with black. It’s the perfect feminine foil for tough. I was sold.Â
Viva Magenta is attention-getting, so don’t expect to blend into a crowd. My first move with this color was a pair of glasses. These glasses are gutsy. The moment I put them on, I felt cool and bold. I loved them. I wear them whenever I want to wake up the world and make a statement.Â
My next Viva Magenta move was a short fur jacket. It immediately caught my husband’s eye in a sea of black, brown, and navy blue jackets. The undertone of the fur in the coat is black, making it perfect for me. When I wear this jacket, I get stopped on the street. Everyone has something to say, and it makes them smile. It’s fun.Â
The Pantone Color of the Year has become a widely recognized cultural phenomenon, with its annual announcement eagerly anticipated by designers, marketers, and consumers worldwide.Â
Viva Magenta has brought out some personality qualities I want others to see. It’s my way of saying that I can still surprise people by putting myself out there. You can do the same thing. Check out some colors and see what grabs you; buy one thing in that shade and watch your world change.Â
