Some Palm Beach County Hispanic Leaders Oppose Florida Immigration Bill

Local Hispanic leaders in Palm Beach Beach County are trying to convince Governor DeSantis not to sign a bill into law that will stop illegal immigration in Florida, and it’s not only Democrats who seem to be having an issue. Local Hispanic GOP leader Lydia Maldonado who is running for chair of the local Republican party, says she is against illegal immigration but will not get involved in the local battle with the governor.

The recent statement from the legislature sends a strong message. Florida isn’t the state for you if you’re an illegal immigrant.

SB 1718 (HB 1617) was recently passed in the legislature, unsurprisingly along party lines, and will be law once Governor DeSantis sign it. The new law addresses border enforcement efforts and affirms Florida as a law and order state.

Illegal immigration is a problem, and the idea that anyone at this point can try to defend it or deny it is absurd, yet some are protesting it. Yesterday, upon returning from Tallahassee, I received a confusing text message from local Hispanic GOP leader Lydia Maldonado, currently running for chair of the Republican Executive Committee (REC) in Palm Beach County, telling me about the Hispanic leaders urging Governor Desantis not to sign this legislation. She sent me a newscast about Hispanic leaders stating they were against the idea of people being questioned about their immigration status. They feel it is wrong to crack down on hiring undocumented workers. Dozens lined up to sign a petition in opposition to the legislation. Members say that we’ll lose a large part of the workforce and that people will stop going to the hospital if their status is questioned. Should this legislation be signed into law, it will be effective starting in July.

Maldonado explained there was a protest with Hispanics in front of the courthouse. When I mentioned that the governor would be signing this legislation into law and that this is one of his priorities, her response was, “OMG.” She then sent me a message posted from a liberal Hispanic Democrat leader who is opposed to the legislation. When I asked if she was for or against this, she said she was for the law but needed to stay out of what was happening. She said she told local leaders her position when pressed on the issue.

Why there is any pushback from a Republican leader is unknown. The new law is necessary. Most Americans recognize the issue. To clarify what the new law will do;

The law will protect American jobs by requiring private employers with twenty-five or more employees to use E-Verify to hire. New employees must present documents to establish their identity. E-verify provides the company with proof that it did not knowingly hire an illegal immigrant.

The bill also combats policies that incentivize illegal immigration by invalidating driver’s licenses issued by another state to undocumented immigrants and prohibits local governments from funding community ID cards for anyone unlawfully in the country.

The bill removes the authority for unauthorized immigrants to be admitted to the Florida Bar.

Hospitals must now inquire about immigration status to identify the cost of illegal immigration to Florida’s healthcare system.

Republican State Rep Kiyan Michael sponsored a bill to crack down on illegal immigration in Florida. Governor DeSantis is expected to sign it into law. Some Hispanic leaders in Palm Beach County are opposed to the legislation.

Republican State Representative Kiyan Michael sponsored this bill because of her horrific experience. Rep Michael and her husband Bobby are known as “angel parents.” This new term describes relatives of people killed by illegal immigrants. Bobby Michael explained to Jolt that their son was killed in a car crash involving an illegal immigrant who had been twice deported. Rep Michael’s experience is what prompted her to run for office. Her passion and conviction didn’t go unnoticed by Governor DeSantis, who endorsed her campaign.

Maldonado said;

When the Governor send the Venezuela immigrant to Martha’s Vineyard, I was the one who came out from the community and defense of the governor chanal5 interview me and you can find the interview on channel 5, so I am not for illegal immigration. (Exactly as written by Lydia Maldonado)

From where I stand, if you have a problem with a law that strengthens laws that were already in place, to begin with, there’s an issue. This new law isn’t against any group of people. It is in support of a path to legal immigration. It is pro-America. America First.
