Owls or Bird Brains – FAU Board Cancels Annual Retreat

The FAU Board of Trustees is imploding because of party politics and just canceled its annual retreat. The search for a new president has been put on hold since a decision was made not to hire Governor Ron DeSantis’s preferred candidate, Florida House Representative Randy Fine, a staunch Republican leader in the House, and a highly successful self-made businessman, who is a strong advocate for parental rights and opposes policies such as DEI, which progressive universities like FAU often push. A university president’s most important work is raising money for the school. FAU’s most significant donor is the state. Knowing that welcoming Rep Fine should have been a no brainer but some trustees and donors felt outraged that a twice-elected governor would dare to tell them how to run their school, but not all of the trustees are on the same page, and the stress is beginning to take its toll.

Things got heated during a trustee meeting this week when Chair Brad Levine said that trustees Alan Levine and Vice Chair Barbara Feingold agreed with the final three candidates for president. Feingold said this was a lie, and then Chair Levine asked her a highly inappropriate question; will she still be giving the school a thirty million dollar donation? Trustee Linda Stoch expressed disgust about the poor decisions the board has made. Emotions ran high.

The next day, the annual board of trustees retreat, a kumbaya meeting where the board gets together for time away to bond in a far-off place, was canceled. The cancellation doesn’t bode well for this board.

Owls are now wondering who will be left on this board by year’s end and what FAU’s fate will be.

Could this school become the northern campus of Miami’s FIU?
