North Dakota Parents FURIOUS-School Board Hiding Children’s Gender Identity, Disobey State Law

A North Dakota school district is in hot water with parents, many of whom are alleging the school is concealing students’ gender identities, despite Gov. Doug Burgum having signed a bill into law prohibiting the deceptive practice earlier this month.

The school board has not made this a secret. In response to the law, Fargo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Rupak Gandhi openly said, “We will not openly out any student because of one law if we know that that’s going to cause harm to that child.”
Gandhi hedged by claiming a perceived conflict between state and federal law on the issue, arguing the district should keep students’ status secret from their parents in the meantime, according to a report from The National Desk.

While the board has framed the policy as advocacy for children who say they’re transgender and not as a push against parental rights, several parents at a board meeting scheduled for last Tuesday were not buying it.

“The way I heard it is that you want to protect kids from their parents,” one father accused the board before slamming the policy as the district “suppressing talk.”

“Not only do you think you know my kids better than I do, you think you know every kid better than every parent does by saying you will not deal with the parents…Won’t you be shocked to discover when this happens to one of your kids?”

One mother came to the podium, beginning her statements by putting things in perspective. She said the school was “breaking the law” to protect their “secret-keeping” from parents.

She went on to ask more challenging questions, pointing out that, by choosing to break the law in this way, the school is placing its legitimacy higher than that of parents.

“Whether or not you agree with the politics of the law or what is behind it, I really urge you all to pay attention to what we’re setting as a precedent. “Whose kids are these? Do they belong to you as a school board? Do they belong to Fargo Public Schools or is each parent’s child ultimately the decision-maker in their family over what is allowed and what is safe for that child? There is no possible way for each teacher to know every kid as intimately as their parents do.”

The mother later added another line, warning her fellow parents and the school board of what role it was stepping into.

“Parenting 101: You teach your kids that nobody that asks you to keep a secret is safe.”
