New ‘Trans’ Movement Has People Identifying as Disabled – Blinding, Paralyzing Selves

The next stage of America’s self-mutilative “trans” movement is here, including people amputating their limbs, severing their spinal cords, and damaging their eyesight. One publication warns that the “transableist” community is on the rise, with people inflicting themselves with life-altering injuries to live out their ‘authentic,’ disabled identity. Commonly regarded as Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), activists are now seeking to ‘normalize’ the condition under the activist label of “transableism,” bringing it in line with other radical, self-destructive leftist social movements.

Wesley J. Smith of the Center on Human Exceptionalism blew this whistle on “transableism” in Evolution News & Science Today,

“The point of changing the identifier,” Smith writes, “is to harness the stunning cultural power of gender ideology to the cause of allowing doctors to ‘treat’ BIID patients by amputating healthy limbs, snipping spinal cords, or destroying eyesight.”

BIID is already a well-documented mental disorder. People afflicted with BIID typically desire the removal of at least one or more of their limbs or seek some degree of paralysis. Individuals sometimes go to extreme lengths to fulfill those desires, such as in the case of an Ottawa man in 2015 who hacked off his hand with a power tool.

The so-called “transabled” community likely remains quite small, with the most recent estimates from St. Thomas University in Canada identifying 37 self-described transableists worldwide in 2015. While Smith reports that transgender activists are “not buying” into the new social movement, he nonetheless warns, “We will soon be ready for the next abyss.”

“Cutting off healthy body parts not involved with sex is the next logical step after transgenderism…

If reality can be defined by one’s subjective inner state instead of objective biological reality, why permit one ‘transition’ and not the other? Indeed, the only distinction I perceive between the two is that gender ideology is backed by the LGBT political juggernaut and ‘transableism’ is not.

But give it time. Once transgenderism becomes just another lifestyle, transableism won’t be far behind.”

Writing for National Review in 2015, Smith also covered the story of Jewel Shuping, a woman with BIID who blinded herself almost a decade prior because she felt she “should’ve been born blind.” Smith added that Shuping was able to do so with the assistance of a certified psychologist, who provided her with drain cleaner. Ultimately, one of her eyes needed to be removed, with the other developing glaucoma and cataracts.

She would later appear on the Dr. Phil Show to explain her decision, saying she felt “imprisoned” by her eyesight.

“There have already been cases of rogue doctors disabling BIID patients and bioethicists advocating such actions,” Smith wrote in January. “But now, the idea is beginning to break into the popular media.”
