Nashville School Shooter Identified as Transgender, Left Behind Manifesto

Nashville is mourning after an elementary school shooting on Monday left six people dead–including three children. Police have identified the shooter as Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old transgender. Officials say that Hale, a biological woman, was previously a student at the small Christian private school and was motivated by “resentment” to carry out the attack. A detailed manifesto was later discovered at the killer’s home.

According to local officials, an active shooter call was placed at 10:13 am on Monday. The bloodshed lasted fourteen minutes before Hale was shot dead by police.

Disturbing surveillance footage of the attack released by Nashville Police shows Hale shooting the glass side doors of The Covenant School before entering the building. She appears in the video wearing a red baseball cap, white t-shirt, and tactical vest. According to police, she opened fire again, choosing her victims randomly.

Six people were killed during the attack, including the school’s headmistress, a custodian, and the pastor’s daughter.

The three students killed were identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, all nine years old.

Hale carried three guns with her to the mass killing, which can be seen adorned with stickers in photographs released by police. Some of the stickers contained writing, including “Hellfire” and “Aiden”– the male name adopted by Hale in her social media. Police confirmed that the shooter was transgender and preferred to use male pronouns.

After the shooting, Nashville Metropolitan police chief John Drake said investigators discovered detailed plans and “writings” at Hale’s home address.

“We have a manifesto, we have some writings that we’re going over that pertain to this day.”

According to Drake, Hale was “prepared to do more harm than was actually done” and had intended to attack a different school, according to the manifesto, but changed her plans after concluding that the school had too much security.

When asked if Hale’s transition played any role in the attack, Drake told reporters, “[We] feel that she identifies as trans, but we’re still in the initial investigation into all of that and if it actually played a role in this incident.”

The police chief did not speculate further but did tell reporters that “there’s some belief that there was some resentment for having to go to that school.”

“We don’t have all the details to that just yet and that’s why this incident occurred… She targeted random students in the school. … Whoever she came in contact with, she fired rounds,”

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Hale’s mother, Norma, gave a brief phone interview to ABC News, telling a reporter, “it’s very, very difficult right now. I think I lost my daughter today.” In the ABC report, neighbors of Norma Hale described the family as “very nice” and “very religious.”

A statement from The Covenant School reads,

“We are grieving tremendous loss and are in shock coming out of the terror that shattered our school and church.  We are focused on loving our students, our families, our faculty and staff and beginning the process of healing.”
