MSNBC Panel Says DeSantis Using Woke ‘As a Slur,’ Baffled by Florida Success

On Friday, an MSNBC expert panel declared that the Republican party is running a “losing platform” by focusing on culture war issues but struggled to explain Ron DeSantis’ historic 20-point victory in November. Joy Reid was joined by BlackPac executive and “politics expert” Adrianne Shropshire, who accused DeSantis of “demoralizing” black people and using the term woke “as a slur.” The panel tried to argue that the Florida governor is “alienating” voters, but Florida election results seem to indicate otherwise.

“Ron DeSantis’s personality is like nails on a chalkboard to me,” Joy Reid complained to her guests. “He just says woke 477 times in a sentence. He just says wokeism, woke thing, woke mob, woke mafia, woke, woke, woke, woke, woke, he keeps saying it over and over and over again.”

The woke TV host continued ranting, trying to deny reality. Reid appeared to point to a recent USA Today poll, claiming it showed that most Americans had a positive view of the word “woke.”

“This doesn’t even poll well. Who is his base?”

Reid was, of course, lying to her audience. According to the USA Today polls, less than a third of Americans consider the term “woke” a compliment. Forty percent consider it to be an insult.

Alleged Republican strategist Susan del Percio then jumped in, claiming that DeSantis’ efforts to remove race and gender ideology from classrooms were a “losing platform.”

“So what I hear is the base saying, we don’t care if we win. We want someone… to yell and scream for me. Except you know what people in politics like donors and establishment people and people who run political groups like to do? They like to win.”

It was an incoherent talking point, given that DeSantis’ platform has transformed a longstanding swing state into a red stronghold, but Reid nodded in agreement. She said that “apathy,” not excitement, had put DeSantis in office.

“This guy just seems like a curmudgeonly anti-black and anti-LGBTQ person, and the reason he won so overwhelmingly in Florida is about 1.3 million people stayed home and didn’t bother to vote.”

Reid was seemingly ignorant that DeSantis had whooped opponent Charlie Crist by more than 1.5 million votes.

Adrianne Shropshire then joined the conversation, saying that DeSantis’ use of the word “woke” was akin to a slur and that the Florida governor was trying to “demonize” black people in his state.

“Yeah. That’s right. I think that, you know, you can say or use the word woke as a slur as much as you want to, I guess. But clearly, it does not play outside of the base that he is playing to.”

“Americans reject this kind of politics,” she asserted.

During the show, Reid attacked Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin, saying he was putting “anti-LGBTQ and anti-black policies at the center” of his platform. Despite achieving a monumental upset against former governor Terry McAuliffe in 2021, Reid told her audience, “I am actually kind of amazed at what Republican strategists, consultants, and base voters think is a good candidate.”

According to the Florida Chamber of Commerce, 81 percent of Republicans approve of Ron DeSantis’ job performance. Both DeSantis and Youngkin hold statewide approval ratings higher than 55 percent.
