Crist and Hernández-Mats expressed support for renewed mandates; Crist was open to more lockdowns, while Hernández-Mats referenced mask mandates.
In an interview on Thursday with Mark Levin, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recounted his exchanges with Crist amid the COVID-19 Pandemic. According to DeSantis, Crist told the Governor he had to shut down in the summer of 2020. DeSantis responded by saying shutting down would devastate Florida.
“Instead, we ended up being the state that people gravitated towards. We had people working, businesses thriving. And now our economic indicators surpass the national average on virtually everything.”
When asked in the Summer of 2021 if he would impose mask mandates and return to lockdowns, Crist responded, “absolutely I would,” according to DeSantis. Crist has not denied DeSantis’ account so far.
According to Fox News, Crist expressed support for new mask mandates as recently as this April. During a campaign event, Crist was asked if he would be open to mandating or regulating masks.
“I would be open to doing what scientists advise — not political scientists.Yes.I just read an article this morning. I’m glad you brought it up. So I’m going to the airport right after this. I’m going to Orlando, and I’m going to wear a mask on the plane. You don’t have to anymore, but I’m going to because Florida is experiencing an uptick that began this week. And it’s not even the Omicron B2. It’s a new variant.”
Crist’s running mate, Karma Hernández-Mats, seems of a similar opinion. Throughout the Pandemic, she opposed re-opening schools or loosening their regulations. From driving hearses by school board meetings to characterizing parents as horror movie slasher villains, the former Teacher’s Union boss made her position on masks in schools clear.

Hernández-Mats doubled down in a recent interview, dismissing parents’ concerns about the impact of mask mandates, school closures, and lockdowns on their children’s well-being.
