Man with Cop Killer Tattoo Arrested for Shooting at Florida City Police Officer

At approximately 4:00 a.m., near Northwest Second Street and Seventh Avenue intersection, the Florida City detective initiated a traffic stop on Virgilio’s vehicle. Shortly after, shots were fired at the detective by Salgado, who was still sitting in his truck when firing at the detective.

“I heard screaming, fighting, and then, like 10 minutes later, I heard gunshots,” said a woman who lives in the area told WSVN.

Investigators said Salgado sped away in his black Nissan Titan pickup truck after firing several shots at the detective. Fortunately, the detective was not hurt.

A round struck the detectives cruiser, blowing out a tire and disabling it, allowing Salgado to get away, police said

Shortly after the shooting, more detectives showed up and, together with the intended victim, began collecting evidence and shell casings.

Police officials released a mug shot of Salgado without a shirt that showed him with the anti-cop tattoo splayed across his chest.

The gunfire left area residents shaken up and concerned for their safety.

“If he’s bold enough to do that, he’d be bold enough to do it to somebody else, a random person, not even a cop,” said the woman who lives in the area told WSVN.

Detectives said they were able to identify Salgado through the officer’s body camera footage, as well as technology that the city has implemented in recent years. That’s cop talk for cameras and license plate readers that track everyone’s movements.

Detectives said they took Virgilio Salgado into custody without incident on Saturday night. And transported him to the Dade County Jail, where he was initially held without bond until seeing a judge at first appearance. According to investigators, the 28-year-old suspect was driving the same black Nissan Titan pickup truck that he was driving during the early Saturday morning traffic stop and shooting.

The suspect, Salgado, and his chest tattoo that reads “Cop Killer,” faces a list of charges, including aggravated assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, driving with a suspended license, and he’s a habitual traffic offender (HTO.)

On Sunday afternoon, the 28-year-old stood before a Miami-Dade Circuit judge, and his bond was set at $21,000.

As of Sunday evening, he had posted his bond but remained locked up at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, aka the Dade County Jail, until Monday morning. Once he is released, he will be required to remain on house arrest.
