Jeb Bush Joins Leading Republicans in Condemning Trump Indictment

On Saturday morning, former Florida Governor and 2016 Presidential candidate Jeb Bush joined the chorus of Republican voices denouncing the indictment of former President Donald Trump by a Manhattan grand jury.

Bush was unlikely to take up Trump’s cause as the two have had a tense relationship since the 2016 Republican primary, where they often traded barbs on the debate stage and in the press.

Still, Bush called the prosecution ‘very political’ and called into question the timing of the decision to indict Trump.

“Bragg’s predecessor didn’t take up the case. The Justice Department didn’t take up the case. Bragg first said he would not take up the case. This is very political, not a matter of justice,” Bush, the second son of former President George H.W. Bush, tweeted.

After echoing allegations from conservative journalist Paul Sperry that Jeb Bush is backing Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for President, Trump recently began attacking Bush again. He screenshotted Sperry’s post: “DEVELOPING: The Bushes are running against Trump through ‘proxy’ candidate DeSantis, according to GOP insiders in Texas and Florida. The entire ‘Bush machine’ is behind his campaign, even helping run it.”

Trump has been a vocal critic of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg both before his indictment and after.

Trump said the indictment was ‘election interference’ at the ‘highest level in history’ and that Democrats have been engaged in a ‘witch hunt’ against him since he announced his presidential run.

“This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history,” Trump said in a statement. “From the time I came down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, and even before I was sworn in as your President of the United States, the Radical Left Democrats – the enemy of the hard-working men and women of this Country – have been engaged in a Witch-Hunt to destroy the Make America Great Again movement.”

Other leading Republicans have also condemned the indictment of Trump.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Ca., who has been attempting to probe into the indictment and engaged in a public war of words with Bragg, said that the DA has ‘routinely freed violent criminals’ while ‘weaponizing’ the US system of justice to go after Trump.

“As he routinely frees violent criminals to terrorize the public, he weaponized our sacred system of justice against President Donald Trump. The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account,” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said in a tweet Thursday.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., echoed McCarthy’s sentiments, saying that the “sham New York indictment of President Donald Trump is one of the clearest examples of extremist Democrats weaponizing government to attack their political opponents. Outrageous.”

Trump is expected to be arraigned this week, and his lawyers have reiterated that he will voluntarily surrender to New York law enforcement but will not be handcuffed.
