Gloria Branch Moves to Top of The Class In School Board Race

Republican Gloria Branch, a long-time Boca Raton resident with deep political roots in the community, daughter of former school board member and school superintendent Art Johnson, filed to run two months ago for Palm Beach County School Board District 5, a seat currently held by Frank Barbieri, who has decided not to run for reelection. Branch has blown every other candidate out of the water with whirlwind fundraising. She has raised $38,165, earning her the highest fundraising spot of any county candidate running for school board. By comparison, earnest newcomer Mike Letsky, a well-liked Republican who announced his run well over a year ago, has raised $6,510.

Republican Gloria Branch has raised the most money of any candidate in Palm Beach County for the school board. If she wins the District 5 race, she will be the first Republican to be in that seat in decades.

Letsky had a tough start with well-known, long-time former Democrat County Commissioner Robert Weinroth in the race. Weinroth switched parties and became a Republican. Weinroth seemed to bring in support and dollars quickly, but then he withdrew from the race and decided to run for Congress for District 23, a seat currently held by Democrat Jared Moskowitz. The craziness of this school board race didn’t stop there. Brian Stenberg, a former Boca City Council candidate, decided to run, which caused former friend and supporter Letsky to brand him a “Judas.” Stenberg ended up withdrawing. The next one running is Dr. Suzanne Page, a Republican activist who had run before. She’s raised $1,650 but has not qualified for the ballot yet. On the Democrat side, Shannon Scaglione raised almost ten thousand, but then she dropped out. Then there’s Democrat activist Mindy Koch, who is well-known in party circles but doesn’t seem to be creating much excitement, as evidenced by the nonexistent funds in her campaign account. Lastly, there’s Democrat Charman Postel, who raised zero dollars but has qualified.

Gloria Branch is shaking things up. She’s as smart as a whip. She’s out and about, shaking hands and kissing babies. Florida Jolt reached out to Branch, who said she’s raised even more funds since this last report, bringing her total to over forty thousand dollars. Anything can happen, but if Branch keeps going at this pace, she will become the first Republican and female school board member in this district in decades.
