Florida Teen Stabs Deputy in the Head During Traffic Stop

A Florida Teen, 14, is in juvenile detention after stabbing a Charlotte County Deputy Sheriff in the head and behind the ear during a traffic stop.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell stated that a patrol deputy spotted a teen riding his bicycle around the Lakehouse Kitchen and Grill restaurant in the area of Babcock Ranch (near Punta Gorda) at approximately 2:00 am. .  The deputy conducted a traffic stop for loitering and prowling as well as violation of the midnight Charlotte County emergency curfew enacted after Hurricane Ian.

When the deputy questioned him why he was out on the street at 2:00 am, in violation of the curfew, the teen stated he was going to a nearby fishing hole but did not have any fishing equipment with him. The teenager tried to flee, and when the deputy went to detain him, he then turned around and struck the deputy on the head causing heavy bleeding. The fight was on, and during the struggle, the teen stabbed the deputy with his pocketknife six times. The teen managed to break away and run, but the deputy was able to use his Taser and place the teen into custody while waiting for back up.

The Deputy was airlifted to the hospital for treatment of the stab wounds to his head, ears, and a defensive wound to his arm. The deputy is now recovering at home.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell Stated.

“I was able to speak with him this morning, thankfully none of the wounds were life-threatening,” Prummell said. “Please keep him in your prayers and God bless.”

The teen later told deputies that he was planning to break into the restaurant and steal some items. The teen was wearing gloves when stopped by the deputy, and a hammer was found in his backpack.
