Florida Man Threatens to Set Hospital on Fire

Florida man Glen Schaeffer, 56, of Gibsonton took a ride to the Hillsborough County Jail after making a threat to burn down St. Joseph’s hospital for revenge Monday evening.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from a family member about Schaefer who said he was reportedly wearing camouflage clothing while driving to the hospital possibly armed with a pipe bomb and or Molotov cocktails.

Patrol deputies located Schaeffer in his vehicle on U.S. 41 south and conducted a felony stop. When deputies attempted to make contact with Schaefer, he refused to exit the vehicle and sped away towards his residence. Deputies then followed and made contact with Schaefer at his home at in the 11000 block of southern creek drive in Gibsonton.

Schaeffer was arrested for fleeing and during a search of the vehicle, deputies located two firearms, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and bottles containing an unknown liquid in the vehicle. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded and after examining the liquid advised the substance was not flammable, so no criminal violation occurred.

“Ensuring the safety of everyone in our community is a responsibility we all share,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “I commend the family member in this case for reporting the suspect’s threatening behavior, and the swift actions of our deputies that thwarted the potential harm to others.”

Investigators from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office were at the scene and Schaefer admitted to them that he was planning on using the liquid to burn down St. Joseph’s hospital.

He also told them the guns he had were in case the hospital security officers, or anyone else threatened his plans. Schaefer also mentioned he wanted to get the attention of the FBI, so a Special Agent from the Tampa division was there during questioning as well.

At this time Schaefer is only charged with fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, but more charges may be on the way.
