Upon arrival, they spoke with employees and witnesses who stated a man, later identified as Tracy Jay Mofield took six electric toothbrushes from the shelf and walked out of the store with the items without paying. They added that the suspect was a white male in his 30s last seen driving a white Lexus heading eastbound on the Overseas Highway towards Islamorada.
Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies spotted the Lexus near Mile Marker 57. The deputies initiated a traffic stop, but Mofield sped away. Deputies did not pursue the vehicle for reasons of public safety, as the crime was not serious enough to warrant pursuit. Deputies issued a be on the lookout (BOLO) for the Lexus.

Not surprisingly, the Lexus was spotted again near mile marker 73/5271 Overseas Highway in Marathon, as there is only one road out of the Florida Keys. Deputies once again initiated a traffic stop, and this time Mofield pulled over and stopped his vehicle.
When questioned by Monroe County deputy sheriff Nicholas Pope, Mofield admitted to stealing the items and told deputy Pope he threw the stolen toothbrushes off the Long Key bridge a few miles back after fleeing from the first traffic stop.
Mofield was transported to the Monroe County Jail and was charged with one count of felony larceny – grand theft of more than $750 but less than $5,000. Mofield’s bail was set at $25,000, and his arraignment has been set for January 3rd, 2023, at 9:00 a.m.
