According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, it happened around 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 14th, at a home on Twin Oaks Drive in Deland.
The victim told deputies the suspect entered his garage and lured him out of his home, posing as a Duke Energy employee. He said he had tree work to do on the property. The suspect produced papers showing a “work order,” then pulled out a pistol and pointed it at the victim, saying: “I want your money.”
The victim gave the man money, but when the suspect tried to enter the home, he yelled, causing the suspect to flee the scene in a waiting truck driven by a second, unknown male suspect.

“Residents should ask for identification from utility workers seeking access to their homes. Sometimes criminals work in pairs, with one person distracting the resident while the other goes around to the back of a home,” said the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help to identify the suspect. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Detective Lee via email at [email protected] or call our non-emergency number, (386) 248-1777. Or call Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida at 888-277-8477 (TIPS); or use the P3 crime tip app and you could receive a cash reward.
People should keep the doors to their houses and vehicles locked. I’ve taken reports at homes where people were in the house, and someone entered and stole items without the residents even knowing. Cars should be kept locked as juveniles like to walk down the street at night checking door handles for unlocked cars and looking for items of value. People leave firearms, birth certificates, social security cards, computers, and other important items in vehicles. Don’t do it!
