Florida Man Crashes Into Fireworks Store – Dies in Explosion
Florida man John Marcano, 53, of West Melbourne died when he crashed his SUV into a fireworks store in West Melbourne.
A traffic homicide investigation is underway after Marcano crashed his SUV into the Phantom Fireworks store at 4433 West New Haven Avenue Rt. 192, in West Melbourne.
Florida Highway Patrol Troopers said Marcano’s SUV struck a Toyota pickup along West New Haven Avenue at about 4:15 p.m., causing both vehicles to travel through an intersection and into the parking lot of the nearby Phantom Fireworks store. The SUV then continued into the store causing a fire and the ignition of firecrackers and rockets which caused the entire inventory to explode.

Troopers stated the entire 5,573 square foot building was destroyed.
“It was wild. I could not believe how close people were to it as the fireworks were still blowing up,” Palm Bay resident Richard Griffin told the Florida Today newspaper. “The mortars and stuff like that, those things can go 100 yards or more when you shoot them straight in the air. So, you’ve got these mortars and all sorts of different types of fireworks that are shooting all over.”

Now that the scene has been deemed safe of any unexploded ordnance, FHP Investigators returned to the scene to continue gathering evidence. They said examinations of the building, intersection and vehicle involved, as well as eyewitness accounts, should shed light on the incident.
FHP Lt. Channing Taylor stated:
“We do have one citizen that has some dash camera of the collision at the intersection,” “We’ve been looking into that. It hasn’t been too much help right now as to determine what the condition of the driver was because we couldn’t see inside the vehicle at the time.”
The Florida Highway Patrol stated that Marcano was on his way to pick up his children when he crashed. At this point, it’s unclear why the crash happened. There will be an autopsy to determine if Marcano was having a medical episode prior to the crash or any other information that could explain what happened.
