Florida Man Burglarizes Gas Station, Steals Dog Food, Cigarettes, Gets Caught After Leaving Debit Card Behind

Lantz Kurtz, 21, of Cocoa Beach, took a ride to the Flagler County Jail after breaking into a Palm Coast gas station and stealing dog food, antifreeze, and cigarillos but leaving his debit card behind at the crime scene to help deputies with the investigation.

Patrol deputies with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a commercial business alarm at a gas station early Sunday morning in Palm Coast, Florida. Upon arrival, they found the front door of the business unlocked.

After conducting a building search of the gas station for suspects and clearing the building, the deputies started searching for evidence of a crime and found a debit card with the name Lantz Kurtz sitting on the counter near one of the registers. While still unsure if a crime occurred or if this was a false alarm, deputies waited on the alarm responder to tell them if anything was missing or damaged.

The owner of the business arrived at the scene, and he fired up the video system. The tape showed deputies surveillance footage of a white male entering the store through the back, selecting several items to take with him, and then unlocking the front door and exiting.

Police say they recognized the suspect as Kurtz, from a vehicle fire earlier in the night. They returned to the scene to see if the vehicle was still there, and lo and behold, they found Kurtz at his disabled vehicle, standing next to the burned-up car, wearing the same clothes as the man in the surveillance video. That’s what’s called a clue. When deputies questioned Kurtz about the burglary and theft, Kurtz, matter-of-factly, admitted to breaking into the gas station and taking a bag of dog food, water, antifreeze, and other items from the store. When asked why his debit card was there, he stated.

“So that I could come back later and pay for it,” Kurtz told police when asked why he left his debit card behind. “Just so they knew my name, you know? Just in case I got picked up. I didn’t want to steal anything. You know, that’s against the law. I don’t know if they teach you guys that.”

Kurtz was arrested for Armed Burglary of a Dwelling/Structure and Petit Theft – 1st Degree. He was booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and released after posting a $10,000 bond.

“He must have really wanted those items to break into a closed convenience store to get them,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Leaving a debit card behind does not absolve you from theft or committing a burglary.”

A Flagler County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told Fox News Digital that Kurtz is alleged to have stolen dog food, antifreeze, cigarillos, and an electronic tobacco device.
