Florida LGBTQ Group Slammed for Issuing Bogus Travel Advisory Over DeSantis Policies

An LGBTQ group in Florida has been receiving flak for issuing a ‘travel advisory’ that urges LGBTQ-identifying individuals to avoid the Sunshine State, claiming that recent laws restrict their ‘health, safety, and freedom.’

The LGBT campaign group, called “Equality Florida,” made headlines, claiming that ‘extremist policies’ supported by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis made the state more “dangerous” for LGBTQ Americans and stripped them of “basic rights.”

“BREAKING: Today, we took the extraordinary step of issuing a travel advisory, warning of the risks posed to the health, safety, and freedom of those considering short or long term travel, or relocation to the state. As an organization that has spent decades working to improve FL’s reputation as a welcoming, inclusive place to live work & visit, it’s with great sadness that we must respond to those asking if it’s safe to travel to or remain in FL as laws strip away basic rights & freedoms.”

It should be noted that some of the bills the organization is referring to are policies restricting n children’s exposure to sexually explicit material and instruction specifically. Measures include banning minors from drag shows, preventing minors from undergoing transgender hormones and surgeries, keeping sexually explicit books out of school libraries, and tightly regulating discussions of sex and gender in the classroom.

It is this shielding of youth that Equality Florida is attacking as a violation of rights.

Equality Florida characterized some of these bills and made a final call for their followers to avoid the state.

“While losing conferences & top students who have written off FL threatens lasting damage to our state, it is most heartbreaking to hear from parents who are selling their homes & moving because school censorship, book bans & health care restrictions have made…their home state less safe for their children. We understand everyone must weigh the risks and decide what is best for their safety, but whether you stay away, leave or remain we ask that you join us in countering these relentless attacks. Help reimagine and build a Florida that is truly safe for and open to all, and where freedom is a reality, not a hollow campaign slogan.”

However, Equality Florida does not speak for everyone in the LGBT community. The Gays Against Groomers Twitter account slammed the announcement as “insane” and counterproductive to the LGBT image.

“If you think preventing children from sterilization and mutilation is somehow “anti-LGBTQ,” you are insane and doing more harm to our community than the biggest bigot could ever hope to. Just leave the kids alone. Period.”

Other observers just hoped that this meant Equality Florida was planning on leaving.

“Does this mean @equalityfl will be taking it toxic radical ideology and leaving the state of Florida? Please say yes. If not then EqualityFL are hypocrites. Bye bye.”

Even the DeSantis Rapid Response Twitter account was happy with the progressives leaving but doubted the alternatives were safer.

“LGBTQ activists, illegal immigration advocates, and NAACP all failed in their years-long quest to stop Gov. DeSantis from enacting commonsense policies. Now they’re ALL warning against travel to Florida Cool! Go vacation somewhere “safer”…Chicago? Baltimore? San Francisco?”
