Florida GOP Congressmen Celebrate Mayorkas Impeachment
The Florida Republican U.S. House delegation celebrated Tuesday evening following the successful impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The historic vote is only the second cabinet impeachment in American history over Mayorkas’s failure to secure the Southern border amid record-high illegal crossings. The resolution narrowly passed by a vote of 214 to 213 after initially failing in the first vote last week.
Sarasota Congressman Greg Steube was one of the co-sponsors of the impeachment resolution. In an interview with Newsmax host Rob Schmitt, he said the vote was the first step in “standing up for the atrocities at the border.”
“It means great things for the American people because Republicans are standing up for the atrocities that are happening at the southern border,” Steube said in the Tuesday night interview.
“It’s the No. 1 issue affecting Americans, it’s the No. 1 issue affecting the safety and security of the American people. And finally, Republicans got the votes together to be able to pass the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas to send it to the Senate,”
Following the vote, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of St. Petersburg urged the U.S. Senate in an X post to remove Mayorkas,
“We have impeached Alejandro Mayorkas for failing the American people and putting our country at risk. Now it’s time for the Senate to do the right thing.”
Naples Congressman Byron Donalds wrote in an X post, “To all families who have lost a loved one due to Joe Biden’s man-made border crisis, we have answered the call: Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas has been IMPEACHED. House Republicans stand with the American people to ensure everything that can be done will be done to SECURE OUR NATION.”

In December, 302,000 encounters were reported along the Southern border, breaking the monthly record.
Rep. Daniel Webster of Clermont said the Tuesday vote was a “significant step” in securing the border and restoring law and order.
“I just voted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas again for his breach of public trust and refusal to comply with federal immigration laws. Securing our borders is one of my top priorities, and holding Secretary Mayorkas accountable is a significant step in restoring law and order.”
Miami-Dade Congressman Carlos Giménez was less optimistic than his colleagues. He told Newsmax that he did not expect much to change at the border, even if the Senate removed Mayorkas.
“This won’t change much, even if Mayorkas were impeached and removed,” Giménez said. “Joe Biden would just find somebody else who’s going to carry out the policies. I’ve never believed for one second that this wasn’t done on purpose. This is exactly what Joe Biden wanted. This is exactly what this administration has wanted all along – this chaos, these millions and millions of immigrants flowing into this country in this fashion. They proved it on day one of his presidency.”

Not only is Secretary Mayorkas horrible at his job, he is willfully refusing to do it.
Thankfully, despite mechanical failures on my flight, we still had enough votes to impeach him tonight. He has abandoned the trust of the American people, and he deserves to be impeached. pic.twitter.com/CxxskRQ6YO

Two House Republicans did not vote on the impeachment resolution–Rep Brian Mast and Rep. Maria Salazar, both from Florida. The pair previously voted in favor of last week’s resolution to impeach Mayorkas. Mast later said he was forced to miss the vote due to “mechanical failures” on his flight.
The U.S. Senate is on a two-week recess and is scheduled to resume on Feb. 26.
