Florida Rep. Mike Waltz (R) says the United States is at grave risk of an imminent terrorist attack, with the southern border “wide open” and over 300 illegal aliens on the FBI’s terror watchlist. Waltz, who is a member of the House Armed Services and Intelligence committees, said Thursday that alarm bells are “blinking red” as migrants continue to pour into the country.
The Republican Congressman made his remarks in an interview with Newsmax host Rob Schmitt. His comments follow a U.S. House hearing Thursday with FBI Director Christopher Wray, who warned of mounting risks to the country’s national security.
“I wasn’t in the hearing, but I would have loved to have asked [Wray] the last time he talked to [Homeland Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas. And the last time he talked to the president?” Waltz told Schmitt.
“And tell him, use your executive authority, as President [Donald] Trump did, and close the darn border, period. But it’s still wide open. And just by point of comparison, under the last administration, the Trump administration, there were 12 that we knew of on the terrorist watchlist. Now, we have over 300. And nobody knows where they are.”
Waltz suggested that the FBI had lost control of the situation, amid the Biden administration’s border crisis. “The FBI is trying to hunt them down, and I think, frankly, Wray is covering his rear end by coming to Congress and saying, ‘Hey, I warned you,'” Waltz said.

On Thursday, Wray appeared before the House Committee on Appropriations for the FBI’s annual budget hearing. The FBI director told members that he was increasingly concerned about a potential “coordinated attack” on the United States, similar to the recent mass shooting near Moscow that left over 130 Russians dead.
“[Of increasing concern] is the potential for a coordinated attack here in the homeland, akin to the ISIS-K attack we saw at the Russia Concert Hall just a couple of weeks ago,” Wray said. According to his written testimony, the bureau had over 4,000 international terror investigations remaining open at the end of the 2023 fiscal year.
“As I look back over my career in law enforcement, I would be hard-pressed to think of a time where so many threats to our public safety and national security were so elevated all at once,”

Since taking office in 2021, more than 7 million illegal immigrants have crossed into the United States under President Joe Biden’s watch. According to one report by Fox News, the total number of illegal aliens in the country has surpassed the total population of 36 individual states.
In FY2023, border agents encountered 169 individuals on the terror watchlist, a significant increase from the 98 reported encounters in FY2022.
“Look, Americans need to be vigilant,” Waltz said. “The alarm bells are blinking red. I’m also on the intelligence committee, and I fear that it’s just a matter of when, not if.”
