5Anthony Fauci took a beating on social media over the weekend after a CNN host grilled him on a new study showing that mask mandates were ineffective during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The former White House chief medical adviser was hammered as a “liar” and a “fraud” by critics online after he acknowledged the study, while still arguing that the mask mandates were effective.
During the Saturday CNN interview, host Michael Smerconish pushed back against Fauci, forcing him to admit the mandates lacked supporting scientific evidence.
“How do we get beyond that finding of that particular review?” Smerconish asked.
“There are other studies, Michael, that show at an individual level, for individuals, they might be protective,” Fauci replied before adding,
“When you’re talking about the effect on the epidemic or the pandemic as a whole, the data are less strong.”
The exchange quickly went viral on social media, with critics of the former White House adviser reposting the video.
“Fauci confronted with the most definitive data analysis possible that masks make ZERO difference against Covid. Not a little, not slight- Zero. And he just mutters some numerical illiteracy bulls–t about ‘individual protection.’ He’s a fraud and a liar,” commentator Buck Sexton wrote on X.

Former senior White House official Cliff Sims commented,
“It’s really hard to assume Fauci’s disastrous ‘mistakes’ were in good faith when he refuses to acknowledge obvious facts that don’t require a PhD to decipher. It looks a lot more like ‘TRUST THE SCIENCE!’ only applies when it suits Fauci’s personal or political narrative.”
“Fauci admits that masks don’t work for the public at large but still absurdly claims masks work on an individual basis,” Kentucky Senator Rand Paul commented. “More subterfuge,”
During the height of the pandemic, the Senator went viral on several occasions for disagreeing with Fauci’s guidance during Senate health hearings. In August 2021, he received a 7-day suspension from Twitter for sharing “a video that quotes 2 peer-reviewed articles saying cloth masks don’t work.”

During the CNN interview, Fauci was asked about a New York Times article where epidemiologist Tom Jefferson stated that,
“The most rigorous and comprehensive analysis of scientific studies conducted on the efficacy of masks for reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses – including COVID-19 – was published last month.”
The study, which was published by the Cochrane Library, concluded that “There is just no evidence that [masks] make any difference.” Jefferson added that the type of mask worn by individuals also “makes no difference.”
