The victim, identified as Carlos Moreno Anarivia, was walking home from a convenience store to his condo at the Plaza at Millennium Condos near the pricey Millenia Mall. As he was walking back, Moreno realized that he was being followed. According to Orange County deputies, Moreno Anarivia was concerned because his entire family, including his kids and some friends, were there celebrating his wife’s birthday.

When Moreno Anarivia got home, he went inside his condo and returned with a machete, ready to confront the would-be mugger. Some party guests and family also came outside to see what was happening. The suspect, later identified as Javien Elliot, shot him in the head twice, killing Moreno Anarivia.

Once Moreno Anarivia fell to the ground, Elliot went through his pockets and stole his wallet and his car keys. Elliot then ran from the scene.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said Elliott was seen on surveillance video and was immediately recognized by their gang unit.
