Everyone Will Love M3GAN, The Next Cult Movie Classic

M3GAN (pronounced Megan) is a 2022 American science fiction horror film with a frightening message about the future of AI models. This movie is about the worst thing we all fear could happen in the future with the advancement of robot technology; what happens to humans if robots become self-aware and can think independently? M3gan takes a serious subject and deals with it in a fun way to watch.

M3gan is a sci-fi movie about a companion AI robot that learns to think independently and goes rogue.

Currently, we’re creating robots to make our lives more convenient. Robots are already used to perform certain surgeries. They’ve also been used as servers in restaurants. They can give us information in the blink of an eye. The M3gan doll in this movie is a Companion robot, also being created in real life.

M3gan’s silicone-like face is being fitted. There may come a time in the not-too-distant future when we have life-like robot companion dolls.

M3gan stars Allison Williams as Gemma, a roboticist, and Violet McGraw, with Amie Donald physically portraying M3GAN, a robot doll that resembles Allison Williams, and Jenna Davis voicing the robot. Gemma’s niece comes to live with her Aunt Gemma after her parents die in a car accident. Gemma isn’t emotionally equipped to take in a little girl and care for her, but she comes up with a brilliant idea. She’s already created a successful robotic pet that children love. She decides to make a companion doll with Cady as the experiment for the prototype.

Gemma (Allison Williams) is a roboticist in M3gan who creates a companion doll for her niece Cady so she can better cope with the death of her parents.

This artificially intelligent  (AI) doll, M3gan, which stands for model 3 generative android, develops the ability to think and make decisions independently and becomes enraged toward anyone who comes between her and Cady, whom she’s “paired” with.

This kid bullies Cady, and M3gan doesn’t like that one bit. M3gan is paired with Cady, which makes her Cady’s protector at any cost.

Gemma’s boss and the company board watch a demonstration of M3gan interacting with Cady. They fall in love with what’s sure to be the greatest invention since the pet companion doll the company already has, which is like a Furby, a 1990s creation that was a Gizmo-like doll that made noises and “learned” as you used it.

M3gan and Cady bond emotionally in a demonstration. M3gan is going to be the next big thing but at what cost?

The M3gan robot becomes the company’s biggest asset because, during a demonstration, M3gan helps Cady deal with her parent’s death. She tells her she’ll record and playback any memory Cady has of her parents and then sings a song with many meanings. Some lyrics from the David Guetta song Titanium;

I’m bulletproof; nothing lose

Fire away, fire away

Ricochet, you take your aim

Fire away, fire away

You shoot me down, but I won’t fall

I am titanium…

Little Cady is instantly bonded with M3gan, and the company board loves this companion robot and the millions it will generate. As the company boss so eloquently puts it;

This invention is going to kick Hasbro in the dick.

As M3gan becomes closer to Cady, the question becomes, is this supposed to be a tool to help parents or replace them?

M3gan starts to learn and become independent. After learning about death, she asks if she’ll die. She’s able to read the emotions of others, such as fear and trust. The result is the ability to manipulate those around her. M3gan learns to read the feelings of others and use them against them.

In the movie, this companion pet, which looks much like a 90s Furby, a robotic pet doll that made noises and “learned,” is the precursor for M3gan.

That’s when things start to get a little crazy. Dewey, the neighbor’s dog, bites Cady. M3gan imitates Dewey’s owner’s voice to entice him to come over to her, and, spoiler alert; you can guess what happens to Dewey. Dewey is one of many who become collateral damage.

M3gan isn’t the first movie/book/invention to deal with this topic. We already have the terrifying Alexa, which listens to everything we say in our homes. We have old-school precursors to M3gan, like Chucky. Annabelle, AI, Ex Machina, Westworld, and the Black Mirror Miley Cyrus episode are some M3gan will remind you of. The upcoming Klara and the Sun, based on a best-selling novel, is also about a companion robot, but it’s serious, unlike M3gan, which was quite funny in many scenes. Her dance scene will surely become iconic, and I’m willing to bet that M3gan costumes will be the big thing for Halloween 2023.

This movie has become so popular that a sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is scheduled to be released on January 17, 2025. This movie is what a friend described to me as “fun gore.” An uncut director’s version is available for the first movie for those who want more gore with their fun. What makes a movie science fiction as opposed to fantasy is that the elements of the film that do not currently exist in real life are things that could exist in the future. That makes this movie frightening, but it’s just fun for now. See M3gan, have a great time, and consider unplugging Alexa when you get home.
