Escaped Murderer Captured in Florida Walking Along Interstate

Georgia man Anthony Moret 67, of Valdosta, was arrested by a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper as he was walking along Interstate 75 near Punta Gorda in Charlotte County, Florida. What was his crime? He was wanted for escaping prison in Georgia where he was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murder.

Moret escaped from the Valdosta Transitional Center in Lowndes County, Georgia. which is near the Florida/Georgia border. When Moret escaped, the Georgia Department of Corrections issued a statewide BOLO (Be On The Lookout) for Moret describing him as a Black male, 6 feet tall, weighing 239 pounds, who was last seen wearing civilian clothing.

Georgia Department of Corrections records show that Moret was serving time for murder and an armed robbery dating back to 1978. Apparently, Moret is good at escaping prison as he also has two prior convictions for escape, with one in 1976 and one in 1985. I guess he just needs a little work on not being recaptured. I would start by not walking down the Interstate in a county chock full of law enforcement officers who are there to assist with the Hurricane Ian response.

A Florida Highway Patrol Trooper spotted Moret around 6:00 am walking southbound along I-75 at mile marker 158 and checked out on a stop there with him. The trooper ran the standard check on Moret and was advised of an active warrant for escape out of the State of Georgia. Moret was taken into custody without further incident.

Moret was arrested for the outstanding warrant and transported to the Charlotte County jail where he will await extradition back home to his cell in the Valdosta Transitional Facility which is actually classified as a minimum security facility that houses only male offenders and has a capacity of 164 inmates.
