Elon Musk Says He Will Support Gov. Ron DeSantis if He Runs for President in 2024

Newly minted Twitter owner and eccentric billionaire Elon Musk said he’d support a  2024 presidential run by Governor DeSantis on Friday as part of a larger thread regarding free speech.

Musk posted a series of replies on free speech, de-platforming,  and his political views, ranging even to Donald Trump.

In reply to a story about Trump’s silent return to Twitter, Musk elaborated on why he thought it was essential to bring Trump back in the first place.

“I’m fine with Trump not tweeting. The important thing is that Twitter correct a grave mistake in banning his account, despite no violation of the law or terms of service. Deplatforming a sitting President undermined public trust in Twitter for half of America,”

While many dismiss Musk’s commentary as partisan, Musk noted in the thread his truly centrist inclinations to legitimize his claims that he brought Trump back out of his obligation to free speech, not political preference.

As a reminder, I was a significant supporter of the Obama-Biden presidency and (reluctantly) voted for Biden over Trump. But freedom of speech is the bedrock of a strong democracy and must take precedence. My preference for the 2024 presidency is someone sensible and centrist. I had hoped that would the case for the Biden administration, but have been disappointed so far.

This rationale is something observers on Twitter seemed to respect.

In the context of Musk’s voting history, one Twitter user asked Musk if he would support A DeSantis’s 2024 bid for the presidency. Musk replied with a simple yes, but stressed that Twitter would continue treating everyone fairly, regardless of Musk’s preferences.
