Donald Trump Indicted By Manhattan Grand Jury-Trump Issues Statement

According to multiple reports, a Manhattan grand jury voted Thursday to indict former President Donald Trump on charges relating to a 2016 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. The felony indictment has been filed under seal with the Manhattan district attorney’s office under Alvin Bragg. Prosecutors are expected to ask the former president to surrender in the coming days to face arraignment. The charges are not currently known. Donald Trump is the first former president in history to face a criminal indictment.

The Manhattan district attorney’s probe into Donald Trump has spanned months, culminating in this month’s grand jury proceedings. The former president first indicated that he would be arrested in a Truth Social post on March 18, claiming that he had been informed through “illegal leaks” that he would be charged the following week. After nearly two weeks had passed without a grand jury vote, reports circulated that the probe would take a hiatus for another month. The New York Times reported Thursday that an arrest was imminent.

Trump has made clear in recent weeks that he intends to continue his White House bid in the face of any criminal proceedings. In a series of statements, he has variously condemned the investigation as a “witch hunt” and “fairytale.” When news of a potential indictment broke, he called on his supporters to rally and protest. Last week, he warned of “death and destruction” if the grand jury voted to issue an indictment.

Update 3/30/2023 6:31 PM: Just minutes ago, President Trump issued a statement:

Republicans have widely condemned District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s politically motivated prosecution of the former president. Bragg, who was first elected Manhattan District Attorney in 2021, did so with the help of the racial activist group Color of Change PAC, which received a $1 million donation from liberal billionaire George Soros. The leftist prosecutor has notoriously directed his office not to seek jail time for violent offenses, including armed robbery, and has downgraded more than half of his office’s felony cases to misdemeanors. His investigation into the former president revolved around a hush money payment made by lawyer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 Trump campaign, allegedly to cover up a 2006 affair.

On Tuesday, President Trump wrote on Truth Social,

“How do you indict an innocent man, a former very successful President who is now running and leading in the polls, that every legal scholar, and virtually every ‘hater,’ says, ‘Don’t do it, there is no case here?’ This is what happens in Third World countries which sadly, the USA is rapidly becoming!”
