Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas is a fraud, says Governor Ron DeSantis.
On Friday, the Florida Republican appeared before a crowd of 9,000 students at Liberty University in Virginia and drew loud applause after calling out the women’s NCAA title theft by a 6-foot-4 male.
“It is wrong to have a swimmer compete for three years on the men’s swim team, switch to the women’s team, and win the women’s national championship,” DeSantis said, drawing cheers from the audience. “That is a fraud. That is wrong.”

Lia Thomas, formerly Will, made headlines in March last year after finishing neck-and-neck with 12-time All-American swimmer Riley Gaines in the women’s 200-yard NCAA championships. While living as a male in 2019, Thomas was an unremarkable contestant, finishing 554th in the men’s competition. Now, he is officially recognized as one of the nation’s top “female” athletes. Even ESPN attempted to lionize Thomas, making him a centerpiece in their 2023 Women’s History Month docuseries.
But Gaines has not been silent about her snubbing by the NCAA or about Thomas’ grotesque and inappropriate interactions with the female swimmers. While the mainstream media applauded Thomas for his bravery, Gaines revealed how she and other women were forced to share a locker room with the towering biological man.
“We did not give our consent, they did not ask for our consent, but in that locker room we turned around and there’s a 6-foot-4 biological man dropping his pants and watching us undress, and we were exposed to male genitalia.”
Gaines has continued to speak up, receiving support from prominent Republican figures like DeSantis. The Left’s response, however, has been less-than-tolerant. Just days ago, Gaines was assaulted and forced into a safe room by a mob of San Francisco State University students.
“It is stunning that in America in 2023, it is acceptable for biological male students to violently assault a woman for standing up for women’s rights,” a spokesperson for Gaines said after the assault.

Last year, Thomas additionally stole a national title from Florida native Emma Weyant. Weyant, an Olympic silver medalist, finished second to the transgender swimmer.
In response, Governor DeSantis issued a proclamation recognizing Weyant as the true winner.
“By allowing men to compete in women’s sports, the NCAA is destroying opportunities for women, making a mockery of its championships, and perpetuating a fraud. In Florida, we reject these lies and recognize Sarasota’s Emma Weyant as the best women’s swimmer in the 500y freestyle.”

While speaking to the crowd at Liberty University, DeSantis also attacked Democrats’ attempts to force a transgender ideology on minors. He called out the doctors responsible for the mutilations and touted his state’s laws banning so-called “gender-affirming care” for minors.
“It is also wrong for physicians to pump minors with puberty blockers or to perform sex change operations on them… And now in Florida, physicians who do those things will lose their medical license.”
