DeSantis: Real Republicans Don’t ‘Subcontract’ Leadership to Dr. Fauci

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis received a warm welcome from the Utah Republicans on Saturday at the state GOP convention. He gave a rousing speech against the “woke mob” and again touted Florida’s reputation as “the place where woke goes to die.” Roughly 2,400 delegates applauded the words of the Sunshine State Governor as he sought to make inroads with local Republicans, at one point affectionately referring to his home state as “The Utah of the Southeast.” While DeSantis has not officially entered the 2024 election, he appeared at various points of speech to take jabs at presidential rival Donald Trump–although not by name.

“We will fight the woke in the legislature. We will fight the woke in the schools. We will fight the woke in the corporations. We will never, ever surrender to the woke mob. We’ve made the state of Florida the place where woke goes to die,” DeSantis proclaimed to the Utah GOP, drawing cheers from the audience.

“We have no choice because the left in this country is playing for keeps.”

During his speech, DeSantis offered criticism of some of his fellow Republicans and separated himself from some other GOP leaders who he says campaign hard but then “act like potted plants” upon taking office.

“Politics is not entertainment. It’s not about building a brand, it’s not about virtue signaling on social media… It’s about delivering results.”

DeSantis then appeared to take a stab at Donald Trump and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, accusing him of handing over power to Anthony Fauci and the “health bureaucrats.”

“Leaders take the bull by the horns and make the decisions for themselves. They don’t subcontract out their leadership to health bureaucrats like Dr. Fauci,”

The Florida governor received a standing ovation from the Orem, Utah crowd. He continued, calling his efforts a “battle to preserve the cause of liberty,”

“Let me just tell you that maybe it’s the little secret, but it might be that Florida is the Utah of the southeast. I’m just saying. You should feel fortunate to live here, just as I’m fortunate to live and work in the state of Florida because throughout our country we’re engaged in a battle to preserve the cause of liberty.”

While DeSantis has not formally thrown his hat into the ring, 86 elected it officials in Utah sent the Florida Governor a letter last November urging him to enter the presidential contest. “Our nation stands at a crossroads. We recognize the need for a strong leader to guide and direct our nation, someone with a proven track record, strong conservative foundation, and who understands the operations of state government,” the officials said in a joint statement.

On Saturday, DeSantis told his supporters,

“We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished in the state of Florida, but I can tell you this: I’ve only begun to fight.”
