DeSantis Moves to Extend Parental Rights in Education Act into High School Classes

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is looking to forbid classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in all grades through the Department of Education, expanding the standards beyond what initially was limited to younger grades.

DeSantis Education Plan

The proposal would not need legislative approval due to its low cost and low impact on other interests.

“The Agency has determined that the proposed rule is not expected to require legislative ratification based on the statement of estimated regulatory costs or if no SERC is required, the information expressly relied upon and described herein: The proposed rule is not expected to have any adverse impact on economic growth, business competitiveness or any other factors listed in s. 120.541(2)(a), F.S., and is not expected to require legislative ratification. The proposed rule is not anticipated to result in any new costs on any stakeholder.”

The proposal is being put forward by the Department of Education and voted on next month by the Statewide Board of Education. Governor appointees lead both institutions.

While the original Parental Rights in Education bill limited its bans to below the third grade, this proposal would generally prohibit instructing on sexual orientation and gender identity from grades 4 through 12 but includes multiple common sense exceptions.

The proposal reads that the ban applies “unless such instruction is either expressly required by state academic standards as adopted in Rule 6A-1.09401, F.A.C., or is part of a reproductive health course or health lesson for which a student’s parent has the option to have his or her student not attend.”

The plan also indicates that violation of these ethical guidelines by teachers or administrators can result in moves against their licenses. Despite revived outrage from critics calling the original act “Don’t Say, Gay,” this proposed expansion does not mention the word gay once either.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the expansion limiting how teachers talked about sex and gender with students and voiced her, and by extension, the White House’s, opposition to the moves. She claimed the move was “disturbing and dangerous” and, like other critics, framed the issue as “anti-LGBTQ+.”

“It’s completely and utterly wrong. And we’ve been very crystal clear about that when it comes to the ‘Don’t Say Gay Bill’ and other actions this Governor has taken in the state of Florida. But make no mistake, this is part of a disturbing and dangerous trend of legislation we’re seeing across the country that are anti-LGBTQ+…”

The DeSantis War Room Twitter account responded quickly, commenting on the reaction.

“Biden’s inept press secretary thinks it’s “disturbing and dangerous” to stop the sexualization of kids at school. Insane.”

Soon after, the DeSantis War Room showed a video of what exactly Biden’s White House wants to expose students to. The footage included books introducing naked shower scenes, penises,  group masturbation with youth, masturbation, and anal sex instructions, and even instructions on how to anonymously “sext.” All directed students, many of them children, and almost all of them minors.

“The Biden White House says it’s “disturbing and dangerous” for Florida to keep this PORN out of schools. Think about that.”
