DeSantis, Haley Slam Trump for Netanyahu Comments
On the campaign trail in New Hampshire, Republican Presidential hopefuls Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley took shots at former President Donald Trump for recent comments he made on Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu.
During his days in the White House, Trump- a longtime ally of Netanyahu- appeared to turn cold towards the Israeli leader this week, saying he had “let us down” just before a U.S. airstrike against Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. During a rally in Florida, he also referred to the Lebanese Islamist militant group Hezbollah as “very smart.”
His comments were quickly seized upon by the GOP primary field.
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who Trump once nominated to serve as his U.N. ambassador, said the remarks were “not what we need in a president.”
“To go and give credit to Hezbollah, to go and congratulate the Chinese Communist Party and to go and criticize the head of a country who just saw massive bloodshed? No, that’s not what we need in a president,” Haley told reporters while in Concord, New Hampshire. “What we need in a president is someone who knows the difference between good and evil.”

Trump later walked back his comments, writing in a series of Truth Social posts Friday that he stood with Netanyahu and supported Israel against the attacks by Hamas. The messages included the hashtags “#IStandWithIsrael” and “#IStandWithBibi.”
On Friday, Governor Ron DeSantis said that the former President’s “cleanup” was not enough.
“This is a different Donald Trump. In 2016, he was freewheeling. He was out there barnstorming the country,” DeSantis told reporters in New Hampshire. “Now, it’s just a different guy. And that’s just, it’s sad to see.”
“Why bring that up when their nation is now at war and facing the worst attack that they’ve ever faced?” DeSantis continued. “That is not how you treat an ally. It’s not how I would treat an ally.”
DeSantis suggested that Trump held a grudge against Netanyahu for the Israeli Prime Minister’s support of Joe Biden following the 2020 election.
“Now is not the time to be doing like what Donald Trump did by attacking Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, attacking Israel’s defense minister, saying somehow that Hezbollah were very smart. We need to all be on the same page. Now is not the time to air personal grievances about an Israeli prime minister. Now is the time to support their right to defend themselves to the hilt. … Now is not the time to be attacking our ally.”

However, the Trump campaign later hit back against DeSantis and Haley, referring to them as “DeSanctus” and “Birdbrain ” respectively. In a statement given to the news site ‘The Messenger,’ Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said,
“Birdbrain and DeSanctus should stop taking Democrat talking points. There has been no bigger defender and advocate for Israel than President Trump. He brought peace to the Middle East with the Abraham Accords, moved the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, and no new wars started under his watch. Maybe Nikki and Ron are opposed to those accomplishments,”
