DeSantis Defiant: Florida Will Not Extradite Trump, ‘Questionable Circumstances’

Gov. Ron DeSantis says that Florida will not cooperate with any extradition requests from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg against Donald Trump due to the “questionable circumstances” of the indictment. The former president and leading 2024 Republican presidential candidate was formally indicted on Thursday after a grand jury vote on charges relating to the 2016 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. In a statement, DeSantis blasted the charges as “un-American” and referred to Bragg as a “Soros-backed” prosecutor with a political agenda.

“The weaponization of the legal system to advance a political agenda turns the rule of law on its head. It is un-American.” DeSantis said on Twitter Thursday evening. “The Soros-backed Manhattan District Attorney has consistently bent the law to downgrade felonies and to excuse criminal misconduct. Yet, now he is stretching the law to target a political opponent.”

“Florida will not assist in an extradition request given the questionable circumstances at issue with this Soros-backed Manhattan prosecutor and his political agenda.”

During the 2016 presidential election, then-candidate Donald Trump ran for office as a resident of New York but officially moved to Florida in September 2019. His primary residence is the Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

DeSantis’ position on an indictment of Trump was the subject of speculation, given the recent breakdown in their relationship. The two former allies now stand as bitter rivals, with DeSantis expected to issue a challenge for the Republican presidential nomination. When asked about the Manhattan grand jury probe earlier this month, the Florida governor rebuffed Trump, telling reporters,

“I don’t know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair.”

He nonetheless condemned the investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, calling it a “manufactured circus by some Soros DA.”

Under Florida law, DeSantis can investigate extradition requests to determine “whether the person ought to be surrendered.” Others have speculated that DeSantis could withhold his signature from any extradition requests sent by New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

DeSantis’ refusal may not be necessary, however. While the exact charges against the former president are unknown, a POLITICO report citing Trump’s legal team suggests that he is preparing to surrender on Tuesday to face an arraignment. According to the report, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office first requested that the former president turn himself in to the authorities on Friday. Still, it postponed the date to allow the Secret Service more time to prepare.

In a series of Truth Social posts Thursday night, Trump blasted the indictment and renewed his vow to retake the White House in 2024.

They only brought this Fake, Corrupt, and Disgraceful Charge against me because I stand with the American People, and they know that I cannot get a fair trial in New York!

These Corrupt Democrat Prosecutors, all from poorly run and very dangerous Democrat run cities, are not going to choose the Republican Nominee, or the next President of the United States!
