DeSantis Defends Star Tennis Player Barred Entry to US Over Vaccination Status

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis penned a letter to the Biden Administration requesting that star tennis player Novak Djokovic be permitted entry into the United States to compete in the Miami Open tennis competition.

While the United States government has lifted a number of Covid-19 restrictions on US citizens, President Biden has refused to lift the travel restriction on foreign nationals who have not received the Covid-19 vaccine.

Djokovic has consistently refused to get the vaccine, which would bar his entry into the United States to compete in an upcoming tennis competition in Miami.

DeSantis called the travel restriction preventing Djokovic from entering the United States’ unfair’ and ‘unacceptable.’

“It has been reported that Novak Djokovic has formally applied and been denied permission from your administration to enter the United States so that he may compete at the upcoming Miami Open tennis tournament,” DeSantis wrote in the letter. “This denial is unfair, unscientific, and unacceptable. It’s time to put pandemic politics aside and give the American people what they want — let him play.”

The Florida Governor called out Biden’s inconsistent policies in preventing Djokovic’s entry into the United States while openly allowing thousands of unvaccinated illegal immigrants to enter the country.

“Furthermore, even as you enacted the Proclamation on air travel that remains in force to this day, your administration pointedly allowed thousands of unvaccinated migrants to enter our country through the southern border,” he wrote.

DeSantis further said that the only thing preventing Djokovic from competing in the United States is a ‘misguided’ vaccine mandate for foreign nationals.

“The only thing keeping Mr. Djokovic from participating,” DeSantis wrote, “is your administration’s continued enforcement of a misguided, unscientific, and out-of-date Covid-19 vaccination requirement for foreign guests seeking to visit our great country.”

“The time has come to give up the fiction that COVID vaccines remain a necessary tool to promote public health,” he added.

Government leaders and manufacturers of the Covid-19 vaccine have publicly admitted that the vaccine does not prevent transmission of the Covid-19 virus, further casting doubt on vaccine mandates and measures that restrict the freedom of unvaccinated people.

“Mr. Djokovic is an extraordinary tennis player who should have every right to compete in this year’s Miami Open, which will commence on March 20,” DeSantis concluded. “I respectfully ask you to grant his requested exemption so that he may delight and inspire tennis fans in Florida and around the Nation.”

DeSantis has been a leading critic of measures that have discriminated against unvaccinated people, rolling out a legislative agenda that would prevent future vaccine mandates in Florida that he is advocating for in the upcoming legislative session in the state.

Novak Djokovic is a Serbian national who is one of the top tennis players in the world—being ranked number one in men’s singles by the Association of Tennis Professionals for over seven years, a record-breaking feat for a men’s tennis player. Djokovic has expressed opposition to forced vaccination, saying he is conscious of what he puts into his body.
