The Dalai Lama has apologized after a disturbing video surfaced showing the Tibetan spiritual leader kissing a young boy on the lips and asking him to suck his tongue. The video, first recorded in February, went viral on social media over the weekend, prompting commentators to condemn the Dalai Lama’s actions as “scandalous” and “absolutely sick.”
The unsettling encounter occurred at a charity event at the Dalai Lama’s temple in India, where he currently lives in exile. In the video, a young boy approaches the spiritual leader and asks for a hug. The 87-year-old then invites the boy to join him on stage, embracing him and directing him to kiss him on the cheek, saying, “first here.”
The Dalai Lama can be seen pulling the boy’s chin towards his lips while saying, “Then I think finally here also.” The spiritual leader holds the boy’s head in his hand while briefly kissing before touching their foreheads together.
After receiving applause from the audience, the Dalai Lama says to the boy, “and suck my tongue,” before tugging the boy’s face within inches of his outstretched tongue. After the boy briefly pokes his tongue out and tries to move away, the spiritual leader again pulls him in for a hug.

Before departing, the Dalai Lama directs the boy to “look to those good human beings who create peace and happiness” and to avoid following “those human beings who are always killing other people.”
Supporters of the Dalai Lama later defended the encounter as an example of the Tibetan spiritual leader being playful with the young boy, but other commentators offered sharp criticism.
“This video is scandalous,” wrote Columbian journalist Vicky Dávila on Twitter. “The Dalai Lama kisses a boy who approaches him on the mouth. The attendees applaud and laugh instead of condemning this aberration. The image is very strong. An old degenerate.”
“The Dalai Lama should be charged with Sexual Assault of a minor,” said Oli London, a former transgender activist with Gays Against Groomers. “Just because he is a religious leader, he should not be immune from prosecution. No one should be allowed to get away with assaulting a child! He is a sick Child Predator!”

On Monday, the Dalai Lama’s Twitter account published a statement apologizing for “the hurt his words may have caused.” The account, which has more than 19 million followers on Twitter, stated,
“A video clip has been circulating that shows a recent meeting when a young boy asked His Holiness the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug. His Holiness wishes to apologise to the boy and his family, as well as his many friends across the world, for the hurt his words may have caused.”
The account added,
“His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident.”
