Florida Woman Yavelin Fernandez, 28, of Homestead, is in the Monroe County Jail after leaving her children unattended at the swimming pool of a Key Largo Hotel, where her 3-year-old daughter almost drowned while she went to party.
Monroe County deputies were dispatched to Gilbert’s Resort in Key Largo about a 3-year-old girl who almost drowned in the Resort pool.

According to deputies, resort security footage showed the girl and a 5-year-old boy alone by the pool. A guest at the resort pulled the girl from the pool, who, according to deputies, was not wearing a flotation device and appeared on the video to be drowning, said Adam Linhardt, a Monroe County sheriff’s office spokesman.
A guest at the resort saw the girl in distress and pulled the toddler from the water, keeping her from drowning late Sunday afternoon, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

According to an MCSO arrest report obtained by Local 10 News, the girl had “red skin, red, watery eyes and (was) coughing up water” after being pulled out.
The guest and resort staff searched the area for the girl’s parents or guardian but couldn’t find anyone. When Fernandez, the girl’s mother, was located, she appeared intoxicated.
Fernandez “was cursing and yelling racial remarks at law enforcement on scene,” deputies wrote in the arrest report.
After watching the surveillance video, deputies discovered that she also left a 5-year-old boy unattended, Linhardt said.
Fernandez told deputies that she had left the girl with her brother for “two seconds,” the report states. But witnesses told deputies that Fernandez hadn’t returned to the pool until nearly 25 minutes after the incident.
Both children are OK, authorities said.
Fernandez was transported to the Monroe County jail and charged with child neglect. She bonded out of jail on Tuesday.
