The carjacking was caught on a surveillance video which was previously released to the public by the Broward Sheriff’s Office. It shows five males walking through the parking lot at the RaceTrac gas station located at 3290 W. Oakland Park Blvd. in Lauderdale Lakes. The victim, driving a red Volkswagen Jetta pulls slowly into the lot and parks near the store.

The five males initially keep walking past the victim but changed their mind and headed back toward the victim’s car. The prime suspect then tells the victim that the one of his taillights is burned out. The victim gets out of his car to take a look at the light and the suspect enters the open drivers side door of the running vehicle.

The victim attempted to pull him out of his car, but the suspect pushed him back and drove off with the door still open while his four friends ran off. The victim fell to the ground, but luckily suffered only minor injuries.

The suspect is seen driving towards a corner of the parking lot where one of his friends jumps into the car, while the three other teens flee the scene. The vehicle was recovered later in the city of Fort Lauderdale.

Information was developed during the investigation that led detectives to the 15 year old being identified as the primary suspect who drove off in the vehicle, and he was arrested on November 30th. After being arrested, the 15 Year old suspect confessed to the crime.

It is unclear at this time if the Broward Sheriff’s office is still pursuing charges against the other 4 males as accessories to the carjacking.
