Brazilian Ex-President Bolsonaro Discharged from Orlando Hospital

Brazilian ex-president Jair Bolsonaro was discharged from an Orlando hospital Tuesday after being admitted for abdominal pain. On Monday, he tweeted a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed and thanked his followers for their support.

His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, said in an Instagram post that his treatment was related to injuries sustained in a knife attack during his 2018 presidential campaign.

Bolsonaro’s hospitalization coincided with the storming of multiple government buildings by thousands of protesters in the capital city of Brazil. According to Brazilian Justice Minister Flavio Dino, over 1,500 supporters of the former president have been detained in connection with the attack.

Bolsonaro traveled to the US just days before his term expired and has since made himself at home in the suburbs of Orlando. He’s been seen wandering a Publix supermarket and enjoying a meal at KFC. While many local fans have celebrated his stay, some lawmakers are less than thrilled with their new neighbor.

State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando) called on Governor DeSantis to remove Bolsonaro from the state, telling News 6 in an interview, “It does not make sense that Bolsonaro is here in Florida avoiding criminal investigations.” Congressman Darren Soto, D-FL, also told News 6 that he believes the former president is trying to dodge criminal prosecution. Bolsonaro is currently residing in Soto’s district.

Congressmen Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, and Joaquin Castro, D-TX, have called for Bolsonaro’s extradition.

However, it is unclear on what grounds he could be extradited, as the Brazilian government has not made any such request.

Bolsonaro has been hospitalized several times in recent years, primarily due to complications from the stabbing. In 2019 he suffered a fall which resulted in temporary memory loss. In 2021, he was hospitalized for abdominal pain and persistent hiccups lasting more than a week.

Bolsonaro told CNN, Brasil that he intends to return to his country by the end of the month to meet with his doctors.
