Biden’s Commissioner Trumka Retreats on Gas Stove Ban After Ginormous Backlash

After widespread condemnation and ridicule, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is backpedaling on its proposed gas stove ban. CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. first raised the possibility of a federal ban on Monday, alleging in an interview with Bloomberg News that gas stoves posed a “hidden hazard.” Trumka further suggested that “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”

CPSC Chairman Alexander Hoehn-Saric issued a statement on Wednesday, walking back the commissioner’s claims.

“Research indicates that emissions from gas stoves can be hazardous,” Hoehn-Saric stated, “but I am not looking to ban gas stoves, and the CPSC has no proceeding to do so.”

The CPSC’s bizarre and brief crusade against gas stovetops has at least partly been spurred on by lawmakers Sen. Cory Booker, D-NJ, and Rep. Don Beyer, D-VA. The pair urged the commission to investigate based on a dubious December 2022 journal article claiming a link between gas stove usage and childhood asthma.

After the CPSC’s investigation went mainstream, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez joined the braying. On Twitter, she alleged a connection between gas stove usage and reduced cognitive performance, despite often using one in her kitchen.

A study published last year has since made its rounds as evidence of the CPSC’s charges. The article claims serious health risks associated with gas stoves before describing its study’s sampling methods.

“The stove was contained in an airtight portion of the room of known volume by hanging plastic sheets (4–6 mil thickness) to partition the kitchen from surrounding space using a ZipWall Dust Barrier System with 8 or 10 ft tension poles. Clear plastic sheets were sealed along the ceiling, walls, and floor using a combination of ZipWall foam bars, painter’s tape, and/or 3 kg sandbags.”

In other words, gas stoves are, in fact, incredibly dangerous to use, provided you’ve built a hermetically-sealed murder room around it first. Go figure.

‘Come and Take It’: DeSantis Rips Potential Federal Ban on Gas Stoves

The latest Green New Idea has been an easy target for the 40 million Americans that operate their gas stove like a normal people.

Even the White House sought to distance itself from the controversy.

“The president does not support banning gas stoves,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a Wednesday briefing. “And the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is independent, is not banning gas stoves. I just want to be very clear on that.”

Still, a gas stove ban has found support in New York, with Governor Kathy Hochul proposing to outlaw natural gas heating and appliances for newly constructed homes and commercial buildings by the end of the decade.
